Sharmila is a 30-year resident of Plano, having moved from NJ in 1996. She and her husband have 2 adult children who live and work in the Dallas metroplex.

She came to the US as a PhD student, ended up completing her Master’s in Comp Sci and getting married and working for 32 years in AT&T Bell Labs and then AT&T Services. Sharmila contributed to several pioneering works at AT&T including the systems that supported AT&T’s initial IP network.

She received the prestigious AT&T Science and Technology Medal in 2012 and holds a patent for her work in defining processes for network migration and is a proud graduate of Leadership Plano.

In addition to HSF, she works with community-based non-profits to educate them on their civic rights and mentoring young people. She received the E. B. Johnson “Sprit of Service Award’ in 2025.

Sharmila loves reading, and enjoys music, travel and  solving puzzles.
