Frances Carnes Allen was the youngest of six children and the first one in her family to go to college. She worked in a Civil rights office in Atlanta, GA in the late 1950s and later served as a United Methodist missionary in the Congo. She became a special education teacher when she was in her 40s and would have been proud to help further the educational opportunities for fist generation students.
